Emma Proctor

Certification for Narrative Exposure Therapy, Freedom from Torture
As an accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and narrative exposure therapist, I bring over a decade of experience from both the National Health Service (“NHS”) and private sector. My extensive background has provided me with a rich understanding of mental health difficulties. I am passionate about guiding individuals through their emotional distress, life challenges, and complex psychological issues. My commitment is to support each person's journey towards self-discovery and a balanced, fulfilling life.
Throughout my career, I have held roles as a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and line manager across various NHS mental health services. In my private practice, I work individually with clients, employing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (“CBT”), Narrative Exposure Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (“ACT”), and Compassion Focused Therapy (“CFT”). I have also developed and led several specialised group treatments, including the pioneering programme 'Life in the Pandemic', designed to help individuals adapt to the challenges of the pandemic and transition back to life after lockdown.
Perinatal specialist
Specialising in perinatal mental health, I assist in managing anxiety, depression, and trauma throughout pregnancy, birth, and the transition to parenthood. Additionally, I have created and facilitated several pre- and postnatal group programs aimed at addressing low mood and anxiety during these critical periods.
Trauma specialist
My expertise includes working with post-traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”), utilising CBT to help individuals cope with trauma, particularly related to childbirth anxiety. I also assist refugees and asylum seekers in overcoming complex PTSD using narrative exposure therapy.
My approach
Key to my approach is compassion and empathy for a client’s difficulties and working collaboratively to understand, process, accept and progress in whatever challenges they face.
I have an integrative style that allows therapy to be tailored to the individual. I work primarily using a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework, but draw on third-wave models such as Mindfulness Based CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as systemic practices.
At the core of my intervention is the client’s journey and building a therapeutic space that feels safe, and allows you to move towards your goals in a sensitive way.
Clinical supervisor
I have extensive experience in supervision, including my role as a teaching fellow and clinical supervisor at University College London (“UCL”), where I taught postgraduate courses on CBT for severe mental health problems. I have also supervised numerous trainees in both low- and high-intensity CBT programmes at UCL, King's College London (“KCL”), Royal Holloway, and the University of Exeter.
